Battery Maintenance for your Golf Cart

Updated: Nov 12, 2021

Every year in the spring Ott Knott Golf Carts phone starts ringing. The customer on the line is asking why his electric golf cart will not run. Nine times out of ten it quit running due to bad maintenance or buying cheap batteries. We recommend buying quality golf cart batteries like US Batteries or Trojan. Buying batteries from the box stores, auto parts stores etc. will not save you money in the long run. The low cost batteries only last a year or two, then you're back to the store to buy more. The high quality golf cart batteries have ten times the life of the other branded batteries. The term you get what you pay for applies here.

Here are a few tips for keeping your batteries going for the long haul.

  1. Fill batteries monthly with distilled or filtered water. (1" down from the cap)

  2. Keep your batteries clean enough to eat off of. Dirt, debris, moisture suck voltage out of your batteries, even when you are not using them.

  3. Pull the battery cables every ninety days. Clean the terminal and cable to shiny new metal. Reseal with battery terminal spray. If you see any turquoise color corrosion on the cables you are to late. Pulling the cables on a schedule will keep this corrosion at bay.

  4. Keep you batteries on the charger when not using your cart. Every time your done with your cart put it back on the charger. Battery charger life and battery life, has a direct correlation to keeping up on you battery maintenance. A well maintained battery will last 7 to 10 years with good maintenance. A battery that is not maintained will only last a year.
